The goal of our school library is to ensure all members of the school community have equitable access to books, information and information technology. The library is a very social environment. It has become a favourite meeting place at the heart of the school and recent renovations have enhanced this scenario.
At Hunters Hill Public School, students have a weekly lesson in the library with Teacher/Librarian Mrs Monica Juresic. Lessons are developed and implemented based on the curriculum and student interests. Students receive instruction in information literacy, are read to, guided in selecting appropriate books for independent reading and borrowing, and supported with school work in a welcoming, positive and innovative learning environment.
As an information specialist, Mrs Juresic selects, organises and maintains the library collection in order to promote independent reading and lifetime learning. Our school aims to create independent learners by fostering students’ research, information literacy, technology, communication and critical thinking skills. Our library supports this with student access to World Book Online. This can be accessed at school and at home using a login provided by the school. (www.worldbookonline.com)
We want reading to be seen as an exciting and pleasurable activity! Students are encouraged to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge each year and Book Week activities are organised to highlight particular authors and/or illustrators. Most recently our students have had the opportunity to meet and be inspired by Aaron Blabey, Anna Feinberg, Mark Greenwood, Frane Lessac and Sarah Davis.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read more and to read more widely.
Students complete their own online records at home or at school. Parents can assist student to enter books read. Lists of the PRC book titles are found on the website. Books available at our school can be found on the My Library app on your DEC portal. Students should complete their records by August. Certificates from the Premier, including Gold certificates are awarded in Term 4 at school.
To join the Challenge, google Premiers Reading Challenge then simply log in with your child’s school user name and password.
We welcome community support of the library and we encourage parents and friends to visit.
